Dark Lord Vertical Tasting

Dark Lord from Three Floyds is like the quintessential Midwest “big beer”. It’s huge (13-15% ABV), it has a cool label, an awesome name, and a must-attend event that is centered around its release every year in April. Plus, death metal starts playing when you crack one of them open. Most people think that the wax is for preventing oxygen and identifying the year it was brewed, but it’s really there to keep the death metal at bay.

Recently, my pal Gus from Professional Beer Reviews decided to crack open the vertical he had been working on, plus a few of the earlier vintages and a couple of barrel-aged Derk Lerds for extra brutality. Thanks, Gus! Gus is working on a video for the tasting, so make sure you check it out when it comes out!

Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout ’11 – Snobby Beer Reviews

This is the Snobby Beer review of Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout from Goose Island Beer Co. in Chicago, IL. This beer is released annually in limited quantities with the “regular” Bourbon County Brand Stout as the base. This is the 2011 batch, and it is brewed with Intelligentsia Anjilanaka Beans. This beer pretty much gets a perfect score on every website – is it justified?

This video features Natalie Phillips from Belmont Party Supply / Brew Sisters Dayton and Joshua Hatfield.

From the Goose Island website:

Brewer’s Notes:
Everyday Goose Island smells the wonderful coffee roasting next to our brewery at Chicago’s Intelligentsia Coffee and Tea. This world class roaster puts the same passion and skill into their coffee as Goose Island does with its beer. This excellent stout is made with a different coffee from our friends next door each year. With the change in coffee comes a change in the flavor profile, making each release truly unique from the previous years.

Goose Island Bourbon County Stout Soon to be Year Round

Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout

Goose Island’s Bourbon County Stout is arguably one of the most coveted Imperial Stouts out there right now. Even after the controversial acquisition from Anheuser-Busch InBev last year, people still go crazy for the beer that is is affectionately called BCBS. You may have even seen my review for the 2009 vintage of this beer.

According to Chicagoist, the black elixir will soon be available year round

The calculated risk of innovation has been a hallmark of Goose Island throughout its tenure as Chicago’s largest brewery, and was the driving force behind the development of the brewery’s coveted Bourbon County Stout. The recent lease of a new barrel warehouse on AB’s dime has allowed Goose Island to double the size of its barrel program and will soon lead to Bourbon County Stout being made available available year-round. This news will be received well by beer enthusiasts who sometimes wait in lines for hours just for the privilege of purchasing a bottle.

From The Honk Heard Round The World: Goose Island One Year After The Sale

This is good news for many fans of the beer as BCBS will be more widely available. However, there is still a layer of uncertainty in regards to the AB Goliath

Looking ahead, Laffler remains uncertain about his expectations.

“If I was a large company purchasing a smaller company in a controversial realm,” he posited, “I wouldn’t change it in the first year. I would keep my hands off, let things die down, then start to do little things. I’m going to have an AB name tag. I have a badge card to open the door to the brewery. I think phone calls are being routed through a call center. It feels like we’re losing some of the family-owned, local, independent part of the business. Is that balanced out by our ability to do things we want to do that we weren’t able to do before? We’ll see. Nothing’s forever and change is inevitable.”

Porter has a more optimistic outlook.

“What we want to have happen at Goose Island is to make so much of this special product that people can’t or won’t or don’t want to make at other breweries that we can build a great big new brewery right here in Chicago,” he said. “One of the first things that happened when I came here was that John Hall took me down to the river and showed the spot where he wants to build a brewery. That was exciting. What we really want is a big new brewery here in Chicago that is a cultural destination, which is what a lot of breweries have become. Damn it, I want people to know where we are. I want there to be a big beer garden on the river. I want people to come from far and wide to get beer they can perhaps only get in our beer garden and have a great time in this amazing place that I’m so happy to be living in.”

What do you think about this? Is Goose Island making the right business decision? Or are they “selling out” to the man? Let me know in the comments section.

EPIC Beer Tasting – 3-1-12

Last night, I was fortunate enough to be invited to an epic beer tasting at Brewtensils.

I’ll save all the talking to a minimum and just get right to the beer porn. I will say that there was a beer that was from 1981, and that was just the tip of the iceberg!

Here is a photo of (most of) the aftermath:

Epic Beer Tasting

Here’s a crudely photoshopped panoramic version of the aftermath:

My 1 Year Anniversary Beer Review Will Be…

February 28 is my “anniversary” of posting beer reviews on Youtube, so I decided that I was going to do something special for the occasion. I couldn’t decide which beer to review, so I thought it would be cool to write all the special beers I had on a piece of paper, cut them out, and tape them onto a dart board. I’ll let the dart decide which beer will mark the occasion!

And, for the record, I had to cut out like 5 minutes of me trying to hit something with the dart. I suck at darts.

I purposely made the video sort of long to build the suspense, but if you want to spoil the surprise it’s revealed at 2:58

Look for the review coming Feb. 28.

Cheers!

January Beer Tasting

Last night, I hosted a small beer tasting for the first time. It was a very enjoyable time! The highlights of the night were The Bruery Batch 300 Tripel, Great Lakes Barrel-Aged Blackout Stout, Cantillon Classic Gueuze, ’08 Goose Island Pere Jacques, and a homebrewed chocolate coconut stout from Jason Box – yum!

50th review! – Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout (’09 Vintage) – Snobby Beer Reviews

MY 50TH REVIEW!

This is the Snobby Beer review of the 2009 version of Bourbon County Brand Stout from Goose Island Beer Co. in Chicago, Illinois. This beer is aged in bourbon barrels, hence the name, and comes in at a whopping 13% ABV! The brewery recommends aging this beer for up to 5 years. BCBS comes out once a year in limited quantities, and is very highly rated on Beer Advocate and Rate Beer.

I posted a question on Facebook asking which beer should be my 50th review, and this beer won by 1 vote.

From the Goose Island website:

Brewer’s Notes:
Brewed in honor of the 1000th batch at our original Clybourn brewpub. A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with thick foam the color of a bourbon barrel. The nose is an intense mix of charred oak, chocolate, vanilla, caramel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer.

Recipe Information:
Style: Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout
Alcohol by Volume: 13%
International Bitterness Units: 60
Color: Midnight
Hops: Willamette
Malt: 2-Row, Munich, Chocolate, Caramel, Roast Barley, Debittered Black”

Snobby Beer Written Reviews – Goose Island Big John

Goose Island Big John

Poured from a bomber into a snifter. Brewed in March 2011.

APPEARANCE

Blacker than black, just a hair of light came through as it was being poured. The head was mocha/chocolate milk colored, small, and dissipated fairly quickly. There was a good amount of lacing as I drank it.
