2012 Dayton Beer Week!

Dayton Beer Week

It’s that time of year again – August 18-24 is Dayton Beer Week! There’s a lot of events going on in the Dayton area all week. I’m serious. There’s a CRAPLOAD of stuff going on. It’s easily my favorite time of year to be a Daytonian. I’m getting thirsty just looking at all the special tappings, beer dinners, art events, parties, and everything else that’s going on. Oh, and did I mention that the whole week ends with Alefest on the 25th? It’s a good time to be in the Gem City.

Brian Petro of Dayton Most Metro wrote a summary of all the things going on – check out the article!

North Coast Old Rasputin XIV Anniversary – Snobby Beer Reviews

This is the Snobby Beer review of Old Rasputin XIV (14th) Anniversary from North Coast Brewing Company in Fort Bragg, California. This is the bourbon barrel aged version of Old Rasputin, which is a year-round Imperial Stout. Old Rasputin is known as being one of the most authentic and popular Russian Imperial Stouts available.

This video features Joshua Hatfield and Natalie Phillips from Belmont Party Supply and Brew Sisters Dayton (who provided the beer). Thanks, Natalie!

Be sure to watch at the end to see the bloopers!

From the North Coast website (about XII, not XIV):

“Rasputin XII is Here!
For the past few years, barrel-aged Old Rasputin has been released in such limited quantities that it has been available only at the brewery retail shop. However, we have received so many requests for this beer that for the 12th anniversary, NCBC produced enough Old Rasputin XII to put into broader distribution. There’s certainly not a flood of it, but it is available in select areas. Check the distributor in your area to find where to get it.

We guarantee that the Old Rasputin XII will be worth the search. It is amazing stuff. Aging in oak whiskey barrels adds a level of complexity that amplifies the espresso/chocolate notes in the flavor profile and takes this unique beer to new heights.

VITAL STATISTICS

Style: Barrel Aged
Color: Black
ABV: 11.2%”

Bell’s Black Note Stout – Snobby Beer Written Reviews

Bell's Black Note Stout

Black Note Stout from Bell’s Brewery, Inc. is a blend of their Expedition Stout and Double Cream stout. It is then aged in retired bourbon barrels for months. I was lucky enough to try this beer on tap at Chappy’s Taproom in Dayton, Ohio. This beer was recently released in bottles in extremely limited quantities for the first time.

From the Bell’s website:

One of the most sought-after stouts in Bell’s history, Black Note Stout blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout and ages the combination in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The resulting harmony of flavors captures the finest features of all three components: malty notes of dark chocolate, espresso & dried fruits, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout and bourbon aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark.

Alcohol by Volume: 11.5%
Original Gravity: 1.112
Shelf Life: N/A

APPEARANCE

Well, what do you expect? It’s black as night, and sat under a mocha-colored head that dissipated quickly. There was no lacing, but the beer had some pretty apparent alcohol legs. There wasn’t any light coming through on this one. With a name like Black Note, would you expect anything else? [Read more...]

Dayton’s First Brewpub Since Before Prohibition Needs Your Help!

Toxic Brewing Company

Toxic Brewing Company is in the process of becoming Dayton, Ohio’s first brewpub since before prohibition. I had the privilege of sampling some home-brewed beer from the folks at Toxic at this year’s Big Beers and Barleywines festival, and it was fantastic. A brewpub would be a great asset to the City of Dayton, as the craft beer scene is getting bigger and bigger. However, due to zoning restraints, Toxic is having to overcome some big hurdles to achieve this.

From Dayton Most Metro

If you’d like to see the first Brewpub in Dayton since the prohibition era, help make their dream come true by writing a letter of support to get variances for 18 parking spots, off-street loading/unloading area and to allow their hours of operation to go beyond 11pm.  You can email letters to info@toxicbrewcompany.comand copy tony.kroeger@daytonohio.gov who is the staff contact at Zoning Appeals.

Please help out and shoot them a quick email in support of the variances.

I can’t wait for the day that I can sit and enjoy a professional craft beer from my own city. Let’s work together to make it happen!

Snobby Beer Reviews – Yuengling Traditional Lager

This is the Snobby Beer Review of Yuengling Traditional Lager from Yuengling Brewing in Pottsville, PA and Tampa, FL. This American Lager comes from America’s Oldest Brewery, and is known for its amber color and it’s slightly malty flavor. Yuengling just recently expanded westward to Ohio, much to the delight of many Ohioans. For whatever reason, Ohioans seem to have always had a huge fondness for Yuengling, and no trip from the Eastern part of the US would be complete without a case or two of the clear, amber-colored beverage. Do Ohio beer drinkers have something to rejoice now that Yuengling is here? Find out in this review.

From the Yuengling website:

“An Iconic American Lager famous for its rich amber color and medium-bodied flavor – with roasted caramel malt for subtle sweetness and a combination of cluster and cascade hops, this true original delivers a well-balanced taste with a very distinct character.”

Snobby Beer Reviews – Founders CBS (Canadian Breakfast Stout)

This is the Snobby Beer Review of the infamous CBS (Canadian Breakfast Stout) made by Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This Imperial Stout was aged in bourbon barrels that previously held pure maple syrup. Bottles of this beer were released for the first time in 2011 – and I FAILED at getting my hands on a bottle. I did, however, get to try a sample of the stuff at the Big Beers and Barleywines Festival in Dayton, Ohio.

I had to cut this review short, but at least I was able to film a review! Filmed on my iPhone 4.

Special thanks to Nick Decker for filming this, and Natalie Moore from Belmont Party Supply for hooking me up with a sample.

From the Founders website:

“There has been a great deal of anticipation and speculation regarding the upcoming release after the success of Blushing Monk, the series’ debut, earlier this year. Canadian Breakfast Stout is the epitome of why Founders launched the Backstage Series: it brings some of the brewery’s most sought-after beers, which have been available primarily at the taproom or at a few select events, to a much larger audience.

Canadian Breakfast Stout is an Imperial Stout brewed with a blend of coffees and imported chocolates, then aged in spent bourbon barrels that have most recently been aging pure Michigan maple syrup. The final product has had stellar reviews and is currently the fifth highest rated beer in the world on www.BeerAdvocate.com.”

Three Floyds is officially distributed in Ohio!

Three Floyds Ohio

Three Floyds is officially in Ohio!

I picked a good month for Three Floyds month!

Some of you may have noticed that FFF confirmed some time ago that they will be distributing to Ohio on their FAQs section.

This is true. However, Ohio will only receive limited release, specialty beers (Seasonal releases and one-offs). Ohio will not drain Chicago and Indiana’s Gumballhead or Alpha King supply. Adding Ohio will allow us to increase production on limited release beers which benefits all markets.

They have finally started to roll out to various stored in Ohio, and will continue to do so in a very limited supply. Locally, a few areas in the Dayton area received the first shipments of some of their beers, such as Dreadnaught, Arctic Panzer Wolf, Behemoth, and Munsterfest. From what I can gather, it appears as though the shipments that Ohio will receive in the future will be limited to seasonal beers, one-off bottles, and occasionally year-round 22 oz. bombers such as Dreadnaught. It doesn’t look like there will be regular shipments.

Belmont Party Supply tweeted yesterday morning that the beers were in stock. More bottle shops in the area should have their shipments in by now, or will have them soon.

Ohio beer drinkers rejoice, and start checking your local bottle shops and bars to see if they received the Three Floyds beers yet. And for those who are wondering, you will be paying a premium for these brews; the prices range from $8 all the way up to $16 per 22 oz. bottle!

For those of you who have never had any of the Three Floyds beer, here are some descriptions/references for you:
